The reigning MVP of the 2022-23 NBA season made his long awaited comeback last Tuesday against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Him being included in the Philadelphia 76ers' starting lineup took everyone by surprise, as while it was expected that Joel Embiid's return was going to be soon, he was listed out for the Sixers game against the Thunder. That's the reason behind the $100K fine applied over Philly by the NBA.
The news was officially informed by the NBA this afternoon in a communication released on the league's X account. The Philadelphia 76ers failed to accurately disclose Embiid's availability to play. There's a strict policy when it comes to violating the league's injury reporting rules.
Joel Embiid was listed out for that Tuesday matchup against the Thunder, scheduled at April's 2nd. The Sixers' superstar ended up seeing nearly 30 minutes of action, registering 24 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists.
It might seem as a bit excesive but as the NBA stated on the official post, there's a history with Philadelphia violating injury reporting rules prior to this last incident.
However, with the amount of expectation revolving around Joel Embiid suiting up and jumping into the scene again, it was a very nice way to set the stage and bring him back to action in front of the home crowd that waited for him more than two months to watch him play again.
Joel came back right on time, and now with him at 100% and with Tyrese recovered as he seemed yesterday, the Sixers suddenly became a major threat to the top teams in the Eastern Conference. Last night both Embiid and especially Maxey torched the Miami Heat playing at the Kaseya Center.
Before the superstar center went down with that knee injury, the Sixers were second behind the Boston Celtics, so Philly has a lot of reason to be optimistic regarding their future. They still have a chance to secure that 6th spot, currently occupied by the Indiana Pacers with a 43-34 record. The Sixers are 8th, with a 42-35 record and five more games to play.
