The Cleveland Cavaliers were ousted from the postseason by the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, and now all eyes are on their greatest player. This offseason, Donovan Mitchell may sign a four-year contract deal for around $208 million. But if he doesn't sign, he'll be a free agent next summer. If Mitchell informs the Cavaliers that he does not want to re-sign, they will have to consider trade possibilities or potentially lose him for nothing in one year.
Even though the Cavaliers' season disappointingly ended on Wednesday, the rumors about Mitchell on Thursday were mostly positive for Cavaliers fans. As reported by The Athletic, "there is a growing sentiment around the league that the Cavaliers will be able to position themselves to receive his commitment" for a long-term agreement.
On the surface, that would be great news for Cleveland, as Mitchell has been a huge asset to the team since joining last summer. However, other changes could be coming if Mitchell agrees to a new deal. For instance, there are growing rumors that head coach J.B. Bickerstaff could be losing his job. Additionally, other reports have said that if Mitchell remains in Cleveland, his teammate Darius Garland could be moved to a different team. Rich Paul, Garland's agent, "would have a conversation with Cavs officials on potentially finding a new home for the one-time All-Star" should Mitchell re-sign.
And what about other players on the team? Will both Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen remain even though they fill similar roles? Will certain roleplayers be sent packing?
Even if Mitchell stays with the Cavaliers, the team will probably look a lot different at the start of next season. Mitchell might still be there but Bickerstaff, Garland, and maybe some others could be gone.
