During All-Star Weekend,
LeBron James of the
Los Angeles Lakers spoke with the press and mentioned that he wasn't sure how he wanted to handle his inevitable retirement. Part of him wishes a grand farewell season, like those given to Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and others. But another part of him would like to just announce his retirement quietly and without fanfare.
James still has at least a few more years left in his career, barring some unforeseen injury. And there are many things that influence his choice.
Firstly, he wants to play alongside his son Bronny, who won't be able to join the NBA until the start of next season. The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly open to the idea of signing Bronny in the draft, especially because it would make LeBron happy. But what happens if Bronny decides to pursue his sophomore year at USC instead of throwing his name into the draft? Will LeBron wait a whole other year to play with his son?
And James has made no secret of his desire to win another championship, which might take some time. The Lakers are doing better than they had been but they don't quite look like championship contenders - yet. Maybe they will by this time next year but perhaps James doesn't want to wait that long.
If James does choose to go on a farewell tour of the league, he will see a celebration unlike any in the NBA's past. That could also influence his choice. At the same time, perhaps James gets the idea to step away from the league this summer or the next and announces something out of the blue.
Either way, James' retirement will rock the NBA to its core.
