The
Washington Wizards have been one of the worst teams in the NBA this season but shocked the basketball community on Sunday as they defeated the
Miami Heat 110-108 at Kaseya Center behind a big scoring night by
Kyle Kuzma.
The Heat are the reigning Eastern Conference champions and are looking to repeat that accomplishment this postseason, but there has been ups-and-downs throughout the year. Miami has dealt with a multitude of injuries and in January, they made a midseason trade to add extra offense by acquiring Terry Rozier. This team is still looking to build chemistry with their main core of players and with one month remaining until the playoffs, there’s not much time left.
They fell short to the Wizards in this contest, as Kyle Kuzma poured in 32 points with 9 rebounds. Corey Kispert scored 22 points and hit 5 triples while Deni Avdija finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Tyus Jones had 12 points with 16 assists and it was a struggle for
Jordan Poole, who recorded just 6 points off the bench.
Jimmy Butler led his team in scoring with 23 points.
Bam Adebayo finished with 16 points and 16 boards. Duncan Robinson and Terry Rozier also ended with 16 points each while Caleb Martin recorded 11 points and 7 rebounds with 3 triples off the bench.
Washington improves to 11-53 with this victory, giving them their 2nd win in a row. The Wizards have officially been eliminated from the playoffs but they are still competing in every game and taking notes of who will be a part of their core moving forward. Their next matchup will be on Tuesday against the Memphis Grizzlies.
Miami drops to 35-29 with this loss, falling to 8th in the East. They sit 2.5 games behind the 4th seeded Knicks so it’s still possible for the Heat to host a round 1 playoff series, but losing to one of the worst teams in the league is embarrassing and concerning. They are currently on a 3-game losing streak and will look to bounce back on Wednesday against the Denver Nuggets in another Finals rematch.
