After being left off the 2020 Team USA roster due to injury, Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving is looking to represent the United States by playing for the men's national team in the 2024 summer Olympics.
The 8-time All-Star is used to the bright lights, as he hit one of the biggest shots in NBA history during Game 7 of the 2016 Finals. The NBA champ tends to shine in the biggest moments, and no stage is bigger than the international audience from the Olympics.
Irving participated in the 2016 Olympics at Rio de Janeiro where he won a gold medal. He started all 8 games in the tournament and averaged 11.4 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.5 rebounds. Despite a roster full of All-Stars and future Hall of Famers, the former Duke point guard still found a way to make an impact with his amazing skillset.
This season, the 3-time All-NBA member is averaging 25.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists for the Dallas Mavericks. These are ridiculous stats while playing alongside MVP candidate Luka Doncic. In his career, Irving has always played next to a superstar, whether it's LeBron James, Kevin Durant, James Harden, or Luka Magic (currently). He is used to coexisting next to other stars which is key when playing for Team USA.
Barring any injuries, the 2024 USA Basketball team is planning to target superstars such as King James, Stephen Curry, Jayson Tatum, Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, Anthony Davis, and Joel Embiid to name a few. Kyrie Irving definitely has the resume and respect around the league to make the roster and if he does, it will be fun to watch.
The 31-year-old point guard has the handles of a wizard and can finish at the rim like no other. He can heat up like a microwave at any given moment and he'll be able to team up with some of his former teammates for the whole world to see.
