No one can deny that
Luka Doncic of the
Dallas Mavericks is one of the best basketball players alive. In fact, he has a real chance of winning his first NBA MVP this season, powered by the impressive average of 34.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 9.7 assists per game.
There are many reasons for Doncic's incredible numbers. But one of the most noteworthy things about Doncic is how he has improved his step-back three-pointer shot. Over the years, he has gotten even better at this one-of-a-kind bucket, which is nearly impossible to block.
In 2018-29, Doncic made 60 of his 166 step-back three attempts. That's an average of 36.1%.
This season, for comparison, Doncic has made 115 of his 294 attempts, landing 39.1% of his step-back threes.
These are very difficult baskets to make so Doncic's percentage is a massive accomplishment. It also greatly helps Dallas' offense because most defenses in the NBA can't get a handle on Doncic when he attempts one.
Doncic has always been able to shoot well from the deep end of the court, and this is a major reason why.
The Slovenian superstar has a very keen ability to read his opponents well. When he gets beyond the three-point arc, he decides if he wants to press forward into the paint or attempt a step-back three. Either way, it keeps the defender on their toes, as they have to move swiftly no matter which way Doncic moves.
His ability to perform a step-back three allows him to get distance between himself and the defense, or possibly draw a foul. Either way, it's a sleek move that is hard to contain.
Doncic's game has improved in a number of subtle ways over the last few years but his increased use of this special shot has made him a true MVP contender.
