Marc Lore and baseball legend Alex Rodriguez were hoping to buy the Minnesota Timberwolves this week but their plan to secure the majority stake of the company fell apart and now current owner Glen Taylor is still in charge of the Western Conference team.
Lore and Rodriguez are still minority owners of the T-Wolves but why weren't they able to secure enough cash to buy them outright?
It's possible that Rodriguez's breakup with pop superstar Jennifer Lopez played a part in the collapse of this deal.
Back in 2022, The New York Post reported that after Rodriguez broke up with Lopez, his cash declined and he wasn't able to make as much money or impress potential investors. Was that at play here?
Plans to buy the Timberwolves were formulated when Rodriguez and Lopez were still together and hit a lot of bumps along the way. Most recently, the Carlyle Group, a private equity firm that was going to invest $300 million in the deal, pulled out and that put the final nail in the coffin. But that means that both Lore and Rodriguez would have to each come up with $200 million. Is Rodriguez strapped for cash since his split from Lopez?
Lore and Rodriguez were unhappy that their attempt to buy the Timebrwolves died but they will remain involved with the team. Will they try to purchase it again in the future? Of course, this wasn't the first time that Rodriguez tried to buy the majority of a sports team. A few years ago, he tried to become the owner of the New York Mets.
Of course, that potential deal was envisioned as a partnership between him and Lopez.
