With just a month remaining in the regular NBA season, the
Los Angeles Lakers are gearing up for what forward
Rui Hachimura describes as a game with playoff implications when they face off against the
Golden State Warriors on Saturday night (8:30 p.m. ET, ABC).
"It's going to be a big game, it's almost a playoff game," remarked Hachimura following Lakers' practice on Friday. "We played them so many times I feel like -- the preseason, the playoffs and regular-season games, all that. So, we know each other well."
The rivalry between L.A. and Golden State has intensified over the past 10 months, with the teams meeting 10 times since last spring's postseason. Impressively, they've split those encounters evenly with a 5-5 record.
Currently, the Lakers (36-31) hold a slim one-game lead over the Warriors (34-31) for the No. 9 spot in the Western Conference standings. If the playoffs began today, L.A. would host Golden State in a high-stakes single-elimination play-in tournament game. The victor of this matchup would then challenge the loser of the No. 7 vs. No. 8 play-in game for a chance to secure a first-round playoff berth.
"Who wants it more?" questioned Hachimura. "We got to show the emotion and try to get this one tomorrow."
Both teams are coming off losses from Wednesday's games. The Lakers suffered a defeat against the Sacramento Kings, while the Warriors, missing key players
Stephen Curry and
Draymond Green, fell to the Dallas Mavericks.
Anticipating the crucial matchup, Lakers coach
Darvin Ham expressed his belief that Golden State will have Curry and Green back in action.
"We prepare as if they're going to play," Ham asserted.
Reflecting on their recent performance, Ham revealed that the team underwent an extensive film session to dissect their play against the Kings before hitting the practice court.
"A lot of dialogue from a few different guys," shared Ham. "I think that's been great. It's been so healthy."
Ham emphasized the importance of open communication within the team, highlighting the need for accountability and constructive feedback to address any shortcomings.
The Lakers, who secured a thrilling double-overtime victory over the Warriors in their last meeting on Jan. 27, have maintained their position at No. 9 in the conference standings despite a 13-8 record since then. As they brace for yet another showdown against their rivals, the Lakers understand the gravity of the moment and the implications this game holds for their postseason aspirations.
