Joel Embiid has completed the most significant night of his NBA career to date after scoring 70 points in the Philadelphia 76ers' victory over the San Antonio Spurs. He is the ninth player in the history of the competition to reach the 70-point barrier and thus achieves a new franchise record surpassing Wilt Chamberlain's 68.
"Obviously, Wilt accomplished everything in the history of this league, and basketball in general so to be in the same conversation, it's pretty cool," the Cameroonian center commented after his incredible feat.
"It was a great night," he continued. "I had it all going on. I've mentioned it several times, a lot of teammates are extremely unselfish and they kept handing me the ball and I just finished it."
Embiid finished his game scoring 24 of the 41 shots he attempted from the field and 21 of the 23 free throws he made. He also added 18 rebounds and 5 assists. All this in just 36 minutes. He had 24 points after the first quarter, 34 at halftime and 59 at the end of the third quarter after an incredible stepback three-pointer.
Embiid finally tied Chamberlain's record with 1:57 remaining with a pair of free throws. Then, after the Sixers managed to get a bucket back, he got a layup on the counterattack for the historic new record.
"I MISSED A LOT OF SHOTS".
"I feel like when you put 40 shots in, obviously, you're supposed to have a big night.I was actually mad at myself, because I missed a lot of easy shots that I've been making all season. A lot of easy shots. But when you shoot that many shots, which I never thought I would shoot that many shots in my life, obviously you're going to make some, and you're going to have a great night," concluded Joel Embiid on his heroics.
