With the NBA planning a new expansion that would add two more teams to the competition, there are two major markets that are favorites to enter the association: Las Vegas and Seattle. According to former Supersonics' and NBA Hall of Famer,
Spencer Haywood, if such thing happened, there's a chance that
Kevin Durant could make a comeback to the original franchise who drafted him, back in 2007.
During thw last All Star Weekend, Haywood revealed that he and Kevin Durant discussed Seattle and the possibility of a Supersonics comeback. "Durant and I kept talking about Seattle. We talked about it at [this year's] All-Star game. I can't go any further, there's some sneaky stuff going on that I can't talk about because it's private. But I wouldn't be surprised to see him back in a Sonics uniform," Haywood said in an interview.
Historical context adds a fascinating element to this speculation. Kevin Durant, one of the NBA's brightest stars, was selected by the
Seattle Supersonics as the second overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. However, just after his first year in the league, the Supersonics moved to Oklahoma City and became the Thunder. Since then, the city of Seattle has been without an NBA team, leaving fans with a sense of loss and a deep nostalgia for professional basketball in the region.
We'll see what happens. KD, 35, is playing his first full season in Phoenix Suns trying to win a ring away from Golden State Warriors. Long gone is the kid who landed in 2007 in Seattle and averaged about 20 points per game, a young player that was going to be one of the best scorers of all time, as the years have now confirmed.
