Karlo Matkovic was selected in the 2022 NBA Draft by the
New Orleans Pelicans, but he stayed in Slovenia, playing for the Petrol Olimpija. A year and a half flew by and now he's ready to fulfill his dreams, taking his talents to the NBA. Olimpija's director Davor Užbinec confirmed the player's decision.
The New Orleans Pelicans selected this young player with their 52nd pick. The team has owned his rights for the past year and a half.
"Already in 2022, when he was selected in the NBA draft, we knew that the day would come when Karlo would leave us, so when we learned that he was leaving, all of us in the club had mixed feelings," Užbinec said.
"He arrived eight years ago and in all these seasons we have enthusiastically followed his development, not only in Zagreb and Ljubljana, but also in Belgrade, where he spent some time as a loan player."
In the 2023/24 season, Karlo Matkovic has averaged 14.4 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and 1.1 assists per game in the Eurocup with Olimpija.
"We are proud that in the current season he has become a real anchor of our game that dominates not only in the regional league but also in the Eurocup and his departure is proof that hard and long-term work can bring great results," added the Slovenian club director.
