Klay Thompson of the
Golden State Warriors went home disappointed on Tuesday night as his team was defeated by the Sacramento Kings in the Play-In Tournament, sent packing without even reaching the playoffs. During the game, Thompson posted zero points.
That capped off a very long, complicated, disappointing season for Thompson, who hasn't been performing like his usual self in months.
Now Thompson has to make some choices about what's next for him. He will enter free agency in just a few weeks. If he had a better season, the Warriors would be eager to sign him to a new deal. But because of his struggles, he will likely see what else is available for him across the league.
Shams Charania said that Thompson will be testing free agency.
“Klay Thompson is very open to seeing his marketplace in free agency,” Charania said on Run It Back. “It’s gonna be the hardest call in his life to make if he does end up finding another spot to leave, as far as calling
Stephen Curry, calling Draymond Green, calling them and saying I’m gone.”
Although Thompson has publicly said that he wants to re-sign with the Warriors this summer, he might not have much control over the situation. If Golden State doesn't want him, they won't offer him anything and he will have to hunt around the league for a new home.
Will the Warriors bring him a smaller new deal that they can afford or cut ties with him entirely? Thompson will have to weigh all his options in the weeks and months ahead.
