The task of encapsulating two decades of
Kobe Bryant's career in the
Los Angeles Lakers Hall of Fame in a single pose, sculpted in bronze, to pay permanent tribute to basketball greatness, initially seemed insurmountable. Faced with this challenge, the Bryant family and the Lakers opted for three representations.
The first, depicts Bryant wearing his iconic No. 8 uniform, with one finger pointing to the sky as he left the court after his legendary 81-point performance against the Raptors in 2006. This statue was unveiled at a ceremony last Thursday, attended by numerous prominent Lakers personalities.
"It's important to note that the pose was chosen by Kobe, so any objection to it is irrelevant," Vanessa Bryant, widow of the legendary player, stated from the stage set up at Star Plaza across from Crypto.com Arena.
The 19-foot-tall, 4,000-pound bronze statue is surrounded by five replica Larry O'Brien Trophies, resting on a black triangle-shaped base as a tribute to the triangular playing system of former Lakers coach Phil Jackson and his assistant Tex Winter. On the side of the base, a quote from Bryant reads, "Leave the game better than you found it. And when it's time for you to go, leave a legend."
To integrate a modern element, the statue features a QR code that fans can scan to access a video of Bryant's greatest moments, narrated by Denzel Washington.
The location and unveiling date of the other two statues - one of Bryant wearing his No. 24 jersey and another of his daughter Gianna, who also died in the tragic helicopter crash in 2020 - have yet to be determined, according to a Lakers spokesman.
"The decision to erect three statues is appropriate, reflecting the profound impact Kobe had on the City of Angels," commented Rob Pelinka, Bryant's friend and agent, now vice president of basketball operations and general manager of the Lakers.
The ceremony was attended by prominent personalities, including Jeanie Buss, Derek Fisher, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Phil Jackson, who gave moving speeches in Bryant's honor. Vanessa Bryant closed the ceremony, highlighting her husband's gesture as an eternal tribute to the fans of Los Angeles.
The Bryant statue is not only a physical representation of the player, but a symbol of excellence, discipline, commitment and family love, as Abdul-Jabbar expressed in his speech. Fisher, for his part, recalled how Bryant became a living legend on and off the court.
The presence of numerous guests, including Bryant's teammates, coaches and friends, underscores the magnitude of his impact on the sports community and beyond. With this gesture, the Lakers and the Bryant family ensure that Kobe's legacy will live on for generations, always remembering his transformative influence on the world of basketball and beyond.
