The internet was abuzz on Thursday night when a rumor popped up online saying that the Los Angeles Lakers were contemplating trading none other than LeBron James. Of course, if this happened it would be one of the most surprising NBA moves of all time.
But according to James' good friend and agent, Rich Paul, this just simply isn't going to happen. Speaking with ESPN on Friday, Paul said plainly, "LeBron won't be traded, and we aren't asking to be."
The social media speculation about James was growing for a number of reasons. Just days ago, he tweeted an emoji of an hourglass, prompting some people to assume that he was indicating his time in Los Angeles could be coming to an end. But things were cranked up even higher on Thursday when a Twitter user with an impressive track record about past NBA trades said that the Lakers were thinking about trading away the four-time champion.
It goes without saying that LA would shake up the entire league if they parted ways with their biggest star. Not only would it severely hurt their chances of making the playoffs this year, but it would also transform the team for years to come.
If the Lakers did commit to a trade for James, they would get a lot in return for him. Even at 39 years old, he is one of the most dominant players in the league and a true difference-maker. If the team or he decided his time in Los Angeles was over, it would be a ground-shaking move. But according to Paul, that will not be a reality any time soon.
