NBA followers were treated to an amazing surprise announcement last week when LeBron James and JJ Redick revealed they were starting a new podcast, Mind The Game. The show, which debuted last week, centers around the two players speaking at length about the game of basketball from a more experienced and cerebral perspective.
it's already been a massive hit and now James is speaking about why he decided to get into the crowded world of podcasting.
“I feel like we was losing the essence of the game of basketball,” LeBron said about his new show. “The true meaning behind the game of basketball and teaching our youth and teaching the people what the game of basketball really truly means."
James went on:
"I think I was getting very frustrated with the daily comparisons every single day. You know, who’s better between you and Dave McMenamin, or how does this affect your legacy? If this guy played in the 50s, would he be this, or if this guy in the 50s played in the 2000s? It’s not good for the youth. Obviously, if you want to hear that you go to the barbershops but when you hear it every day on national television and I felt like our audience needed a different approach and understand the true essence of the game and how I fell in love with the game."
The show is definitely a very unique and different take on the basketball podcasts. While most shows talk about headlines and recent games, James and Redick take a deep dive into the most intricate parts of the NBA, discussing their thought processes, their opinions, and very detailed aspects of basketball.
James and Redick knew that their podcast would instantly garner a ton of attention so the fact that they decided to take this route is very admirable. They are trying to do their fans a service and teach them a lot more about NBA. Instead of just doing what everyone else has, these two basketball icons have once again blazed a new trail for themselves.
