On Tuesday night, the San Antonio Spurs met the Minnesota Timberwolves for a game that was billed as the "Battle of the Bigs." That's because it was a chance to Victor Wembanyama to face off against his friend and mentor Rudy Gobert.
Unsurprisingly, the T-Wolves moved past the Spurs with ease, beating them 114-105. And after the game, Wembanyama spoke at length about how special Gobert is.
"He [Gobert] is the central point of their defense. Not only is he individually a good player, but he's found his place. You might be the best defensive player in the league, but if you're by yourself it doesn't work," Wembanyama said.
While many people thought the Spurs player's words were just him celebrating Gobert, certain analysts and insiders felt that he was casting shade at the rest of his team, hence the "if you're by yourself" comment.
It has become abundantly clear that Wembanyama is a phenomenally talented young player and perhaps the best rookie in years. He is averaging 20.6 points, 10.2 rebounds, and a league-high 3.3 blocks per game. However, it's also very clear that the Spurs are a weak team that just doesn't have the sort of roster that can really help the French phenom shine. They are the worst team in the West with an 11-48 record.
Meanwhile, the Timberwolves are the best team in that conference and Gobert is a huge part of that. Gobert is recording 13.7 points and 12.7 rebounds per game and is landing 2.1 blocks per game. He is well on his way to another Defensive Player of the Year trophy, although Wembanyama is generally considered a distant second for that prize.
On Tuesday night, Wembanyama was easily defeated by the Timberwolves and he got a chance to learn a few things from the man who has already taught him so much.
