Just one year under a new management, and Mat Ishbia (Phoenix Suns owner) has accomplished something very important. The All-Star game will be returning to Phoenix after its last edition celebrated in the Valley, back in 2009.
The NBA never stops and, although the All-Star game was a few weeks ago, the league is already working on the future of the event. We know the upcoming All-Star destinations, as in 2025 the celebration will be taking place at the home of the last NBA dynasty, San Francisco, Golden State Warriors headquarters. The last he Warriors hosted the event was in the year 2000, from which we'll forever remember Vince Carter legendary performance in the Slam Dunk Contest.
2026 the All-Star will stay in California, but moving it a few miles towards Los Angeles. The Clippers will be hosting the event in their brand new next generation arena.
For the 2027 All-Star Weekend edition, Phoenix ownership has won the bids and now they'll be organizing two All-Stars in 4 years. The 2024 WNBA All-Star will be taking place there too.
The event will be returning after 18 years if everything goes as planned. Back to 09', if we remember that Sunday's game, it featured the "redemption" game between Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal in which they shared the All-Star Game MVP.
Phoenix also hosted the All-Star back in 1995, the second straight All-Star game without Michael Jordan, who was midway through his first retirement. Shaq was also a force in that game, although the MVP was Mitch Richmond.
This new ownership has put back the Suns in a place of relevance among the NBA. The team had improved over the last few years, reaching the Finals in 2021, but they pulled the trigger on two massive deals bringing Kevin Durant first, and this season signing Bradley Beal. We'll see what happens but the Suns are working to become one of the league's most competitive and important organizations.
