The
Toronto Raptors could not defend home court in this game, as they lost to the
Brooklyn Nets 96-88 at Scotiabank Arena. However, the bigger news of the night may be the legal issues surrounding big man
Jontay Porter.
The Raptors seem to be throwing their season away as it’s unlikely that they’ll make the play-in tournament. A lot of their key rotational players are sitting out due to various injuries and this has allowed role players to get some playing time. Jontay Porter is one of those players, however he had different intentions when he stepped on the court.
The 24-year-old is currently under investigation for sports betting, specifically gambling on himself. Therefore, he was inactive for this game. With more minutes to go around, Gary Trent Jr. led the team with 18 points. Big man Kelly Olynyk got the start and finished with 10 points with 9 assists. Bruce Brown provided 10 points off the bench while Javon Freeman-Liberty had 15 points.
Dennis Schroder led his team with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists.
Mikal Bridges had 13 points with 3 triples while Nic Claxton recorded 9 points and 16 boards. Trendon Watford provided 19 points and 7 rebounds off the bench.
Toronto drops to 23-49 with this loss and inch closer to playoff elimination. It will be interesting to see what ends up happening involving Johntay Porter but in the meantime, the role players for this squad will continue to get extra minutes with all the absences. The Raptors are on an 11-game losing streak and will face off against the New York Knicks on Wednesday.
Brooklyn lives to fight another day as they improve to 27-45 with this win. They haven’t had the best season either and are most likely going to miss the play-in as well. The Nets are 2-8 over their last 10 games and will play against the Washington Wizards on Wednesday.
