The
Philadelphia 76ers traveled to Texas to face the
San Antonio Spurs at Frost Bank Center and it was an entertaining contest.
Victor Wembanyama and
Tyrese Maxey fought till the end and ultimately the road team came out on top 133-126 in a double overtime thriller.
Joel Embiid did not play in this game as it was a back-to-back. Therefore, Maxey received a heavier workload while Wemby dominated both sides of the court with his size. The 1st time All-Star hit the game-tying layup in regulation to force overtime while KJ Martin had the game-tying dunk in OT to force another extra period.
The 23-year-old guard scored a career-high 52 points in this win for the 76ers. Kelly Oubre Jr. had 26 points and 8 boards while Paul Reed recorded 11 points and 10 rebounds. Buddy Hield provided 10 points off the bench while Ricky Council IV contributed 11 points and 4 steals.
Victor Wembanyama made an impact on both ends of the floor as he finished with 33 points, 18 rebounds, 6 assists, 7 blocks, and 5 triples for the Spurs. Wemby is proving to be an elite 2-way player and already one of the best players in the league at just 20 years old. The favorite to win Rookie of the Year is having an amazing start to his career and is showing that he can go down as one of the greatest to ever play this game.
Malachi Branham scored 22 points with 5 three-pointers while Julian Champagnie had 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 steals. Tre Jones recorded 17 points, 8 boards, 8 assists, and 2 steals while Zach Collins provided 9 points and 2 blocks off the bench.
Philadelphia improves to 44-35 with this win and jumps up to the 7th seed in the East. They are 1 game behind the Pacers for the 6th seed so there is still a chance that the 76ers can escape the play-in tournament. This team is heating up at the right time as they are currently on a 5-game winning streak and they’ll look to keep it up on Tuesday against the Detroit Pistons.
San Antonio drops to 19-59 with this loss. They will look to add another top talent to their young roster and build around their prized possession in Wemby. The rookie is playing like a generational talent and the Spurs seem to be a problem for the next decade. They are 4-6 over their last 10 games and will look to avenge this loss on Tuesday against the Memphis Grizzlies.
