The moment the
San Antonio Spurs took
Victor Wembanyama at the number one pick in the 2023 NBA draft, their were very high expectations for the French star. It is safe to say after his rookie season he has definitely lived up to the hype surrounding him and more this year. He has broken a lot of records and has done certain things that either haven’t been done before, or haven't been done for in awhile.
After one of the best rookie seasons of all-time, he had an interview with The Ringer were he was asked about how his rookie season went and if he was surprised at all with the way it went.
"I wouldn't say surprised because to me it's impossible to be surprised by you know, your own performance, good or bad 'cause it's you know, ultimately, everything is a result of your own work and your own you know mentality so I always want more so I'm not surprised."
The front-runner for the
rookie of the year and could finish top three if not top five in the defensive player of the year race. Is not surprised at all with how he played this season. To put into perspective on how his rookie season went he led the league in stepback three-point percentage.
He became the first player since Shaq to record 100+ points and 10+ blocks in the first five games. Earlier this year, he became the first rookie since Tim Duncan to record 30 points, 10 rebounds, and six blocks in a game. Not only that, later in the year Wemby became the first rookie since David Robinson to have a triple-double in blocks.
He became the first NBA player to score at least 1,500 points, block 250 shots, and knock down 100 3-pointers all in the same year. These are just some of the remarkable things Wemby has done this rookie year.
You can definitely understand why Wemby is not shocked with how he played this season, because he know's what kind of talent he has and what kind of player he can be. However, he is probably surprised with some of the things, that we mentioned above, that he was able to accomplish. Him averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assist, 3.6 blocks, 1.2 steals, while shooting 46.5% from the field, and 32.5% from three. That is what he is not surprised about doing.
With year one for Victor Wembanyama in the books. It is going to be interesting to see how he continues to improve and should make the league worried that this is most likely the worse version of Wemby we will see.
