Victor Wembanyama had another phenomenal performance on
Sunday, and he’s solidifying himself as this year’s Rookie of the Year. He
dominated in this game to lead the
San Antonio Spurs to a 117-105 victory over
the
Indiana Pacers at Frost Bank Center.
There was a bunch of hype surrounding Wemby as he entered
his rookie year in the NBA, and so far he has exceeded expectations. The first
overall pick is already one of the best defenders in the NBA and he has proved
his versatility, as he’s able to handle the ball, shoot from 3, or post up on
any possession. He truly is a unicorn and the ceiling is sky high for this
French big man.
Vic finished tonight with an astonishing 31 points, 12
rebounds, 6 assists, and 6 blocks with 3 made triples. Malachi Branham scored
18 points while Devin Vassell had 17 points and 9 rebounds. Jeremy Sochan ended
with 12 points and 8 boards while Keldon Johnson recorded 17 points off the bench.
For the Pacers,
Pascal Siakam recorded 21 points and 8
rebounds on 59% shooting. Myles Turner had 16 points and 10 rebounds while it
was another struggle of a game for
Tyrese Haliburton, as he finished with just
12 points on 25% shooting. T.J. McConnell scored a team high 26 points off the
bench while Bennedict Mathurin contributed 13 points.
San Antonio improves to 13-48 with this win, and they are
slowly starting to figure things out. Although it’s too late in the season to
compete for anything of meaning, it’s a good sign for the Spurs organization
that the team is starting to put together wins with their franchise player leading
the show. They have now won 2 games in a row and will look to continue this
streak on Tuesday against the Houston Rockets.
Meanwhile, this loss drops the Pacers to 34-28, keeping them
as the 8th seed in the East. Despite this loss, Indiana is still
just 2.5 games away from jumping up to the 4th seed, so every game
is crucial from here on out for this squad. They are on a 2-game losing streak
and will look to bounce back on Tuesday against the Dallas Mavericks.
