There is a very good chance that
D'Angelo Russell is playing for a different team by the end of next month but
Atlanta Hawks fans definitely don't want it to be for them. Russell learned this the hard way on Tuesday night as his
Los Angeles Lakers faced the Hawks and a very noisy, opinionated crowd.
As Russell prepared to take a couple of foul shots early in the game, one section of fans at Atlanta's State Farm Arena began chanting "We don't want you!" over and over again at the guard.
For weeks now, Russell has been at the center of a ton of speculation, as it seems clear that the Lakers will likely move him from the team in the near future. The Lakers are keen on landing
Dejounte Murray of the Hawks and there is a chance that Russell is part of the deal that gets him.
However, Hawks fans don't want Russell for a number of reasons. Despite their opinions, he is playing some of the best basketball of his career right now, scoring an average of 22.7 points and 6 assists on 48.8% from the field during the month of January. He has also maintained a 45.9% three-point percentage during that time.
Meanwhile, Murray has put up 21.5 points, 5.2 assists, and 5 rebounds during that time.
Hawks faithful aren't the only ones who don't want Russell. According to most reports, the team's front office has no interest in Russell either. However, he might still be part of the deal for Murray, and could simply be sent to a third team.
It's not clear what the future of the Lakers and Hawks looks like but both teams could be radically different in a few weeks. However, it's unlikely that the fans heckling Russell on Tuesday night will have to accept him on the roster soon.
