While the upcoming 2024 NBA Draft isn't having as much hype as the previous one, where Victor Wembanyama stole the show and was the undisputed 1st pick months before the Draft was even celebrated, this next summer there's one player who's positioning as the top selection: Cody Williams. In a 2023 interview with NBADraft.net, Williams shared some interesting thoughts to help us get to know him a little better.
Cody Williams is one of the candidates to end up as the 1st pick of the 2024 NBA Draft. This young man from the Colorado Buffaloes is only 19 years old, he was a consensus five-star recruit and one of the top players in the 2023 class, according to major recruiting services.
He's also Oklahoma City Thunder's Jalen Williams younger brother. This year Jalen is playing at a fantastic level for his team, and when asked about what kind of advices comes from the big brother, Cody answered:
"Just to keep your head down and work. Every time you feel like taking a day off staying at home, watching Netflix, thousands of guys are behind you, working to get better. And all these guys, I know for a fact they’re not sitting around taking a day off. So it’s like, just always keep pushing to keep getting better. The more you work out, the better you get, and you play better. Just keep your head down, and don;t worry about the media. Stay focused and all the other stuff will work out."
A great advice and a great mindset to arrive to the NBA for this young man, who's very aware of the competition and the level of talent that he's going to face in the league.
Williams' height allows him to play at several positions, although he sees himself as a true point-guard:
"That’s my natural position. That’s what I played for my high school team even when I got to 6-8. But as I’ve gotten older I’m learning to play off the ball. I still have those skills but now I can shoot it plus run the offense. The added height helps with making skip passes."
In Cody's words, his game is "smooth". He's aware that his versatility is one of his biggest virtues. He can run the point, he can shoot, he has some post moves. But he also highlightens another crucial aspect, his unselfish style of play.
"Winning is everything. We don’t come all this way to practice twice a day and work hard just to lose. Coach said it. Nobody looks at how many you scored or the individual stuff. It’s whether you won the game. So that’s our one goal," responded Williams when he was asked about the importance of winning.
There's no doubt about how mature this kid is despite his age. Cody isn't much about being the 1st pick, he doesn't care much about social media, he just wants work hard and keep improving. A promising young player will be entering the league in a few months.
