This has been a rather challenging year for the Atlanta Hawks franchise. The team was expected to rank way higher considering the fact that this was the second year of the dynamic duo formed by Trae Young and Dejounte Murray. The two former All-stars were anticipated as one of the most dangerous backcourts but unfortunately, injuries hampered the Hawks and they haven't lived up to their potential. This is what triggered all kinds of trade rumors around both players and in a recent interview with Bleacher Report, they addressed the subject.
The Hawks recently secured that 10th spot and they will be competing for a place in the following playoffs against the Chicago Bulls. While this is below what was expected, the team has been playing at a very high level over the last two weeks, especially if we consider their consecutive wins against the NBA's best team, the Boston Celtics.
Dejounte Murray and Trae Young were on a Bleacher Report podcast titled "From the Point", where they took the time to dismantle those repeated trade rumors throughout the whole season:
"For me when I see you know just all the BS, trade this guy or trade that guy, it means nothing. It's somebody behind their computer, they could be at Starbucks right now or they could be in a classroom you know wherever they're at,” Murray said. “I'm not the GM, he's not the GM. I'm not the coach, he's not the coach so for me that stuff means nothing. We’re great, we communicate, it’s authentic, but at the end of the day that stuff is that stuff. When you keep the outside noise the outside noise it doesn’t bother you."
With the Hawks underperforming at some point and both players being dominant ball handlers and playing similar positions on the court, it was just a matter of time that those transfer gossips started to rise.
"It’s hard to get to that spot, but it’s not like we aren’t trying, it’s not like we don’t click as people," Young said. "We don’t let the outside noise affect that. Like you can tell hopefully by our emotion when I’m watching him and hopefully everything else. So it’s like that s— don’t phase me."
"I wanted to avoid the play-in as much as I can with just the winning mentality and being a competitor. Obviously, with us being hurt and not being able to have a consistent roster, it doesn't help, but at the end of the day, it's still good to have a chance," Murray said. "So we continue to handle business the rest of the way and, you know, get to that game – wherever we play, where we play – and just be ready to go," concluded Dejounte, who's been the undisputed leader of this team with Young sidelined.
Perhaps the media is a bit unfair with Atlanta. They did clinched that 10th place playing with one of their main guys out for 21 games. Young underwent surgery due to a torn ligament in one of his fingers. They've shown flashes of their potential playing without him and the big question is what can they accomplish once Trae is back.
