Just a few weeks ago,
Draymond Green of the
Golden State Warriors made a stark comment about
Victor Wembanyama's chances of winning
Defensive Player of the Year.
“I don't think you can give that award to somebody who's on 24th best defense in the league," Green said of Wembanyama.
But a few weeks later, Green has totally changed his mind about the Spurs rookie and thinks he definitely deserves to win DPOY.
"I know I said on here a little while back that Wemby should not be the Defensive Player of the Year, and I lied,” Green said.
He added, "Wemby should be the Defensive Player of the Year because he is that amazing – defensively. The way he impacts the game on the defensive end, whether it’s off the ball, on the ball, it’s a problem."
"I don't know what lab he was created in, but I need to go create me a son in that lab," Green said.
It is very hard to ignore the defensive talents that Wembanyama has. Right when he joined the league, people knew that he was going to be very troublesome for his opponents due to his immense height and wild wingspan.
But in his first season alone, Wembanyama has also enhanced his offensive skills too. He is now a much more talented scorer and floor general. That, paired with his defensive power, is providing a lot of potential for the Spurs.
That being said, most analysts agree that
Rudy Gobert likely has the best chance of winning Defensive Player of the Year this season. But Wembanayama is likely to win Rookie of the Year. And in the seasons ahead, the Spurs star could win DPOY multiple times.
