Bob Myers who was the General Manager for the Golden State Warriors since 2012, finally stepped down in 2023. He won four championships with the Warriors and was a big part in making the Warriors a dynasty.
Recently he appeared on JJ Reddick's podcast called "The Old Man & the Three" to talk about his departure from the Warriors and how hard it was for him to tell Stephen Curry about the decision.
"When I decided I was leaving, I went to see him for dinner. I cried when I told him I was done," Myers recalled. "Mostly because I felt like I wasn't going to see him every day. Not because I'm 'giving up another chance to win a championship.' None of that. It was more like this person's not going to be in my life as much as they used to be and I'm doing this to myself.
"Because he's such a good person, such a good light. He's a light that I got to show up and be around ... it's tough, I do miss him. I miss the guy. He's a genuine article. People that think he's like that for the cameras or 'he's not really that nice a guy.' That's crap, he is man."
I could only imagine how hard that was for him to tell Curry that he was stepping down. Someone who you have built a great relationship with, admire and winning four championships in the process. Myers built a winning culture for the Warriors and it all started with Curry.
However, like Myers said it isn't about missing the chance to win another championship, or being with the warriors that he is going to miss the most. It is being around truly remarkable people like Curry that he will miss the most and not seeing them as much as he did.
Currently Myers is working for ESPN as an analyst appearing on many shows like "NBA Countdown." Where he has talked and covered many Warriors' games. It is very interesting now to see Myers talk about the Warriors and just the NBA in general as a fan, and not as a GM of the team.
