Isaiah Thomas spent less than three seasons playing for the
Boston Celtics but he made his time with that team count. During his tenure with the Celtics, the guard scored 24.7 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 6 assists per game. He also earned two All-Star appearances.
But he didn't remain in Boston for long and was then shipped out to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, and a number of other teams. He would eventually leave the NBA although he is still playing for the G League and could be eying a comeback to the league.
If he does return, the Celtics could create a great comeback story by signing Thomas again. But will they?
The Celtics have changed a lot since he left the team. He helped transform the franchise into a playoff contender and made it so attractive that Kyrie Irving wants to come over. Sadly, the acquisition of Irving cost the Celtics Thomas himself.
At 35 years old, Thomas is still rather healthy and his explosive time in the G League proves he could really help the Celtics, especially coming off the bench. For a cheap contract, they would get a driven player with plenty of experience and a dogged drive that never runs out.
Thomas says that players on the team remain close to him and that means that they'd be happy to play alongside him. This is yet another reason why Thomas could be a big boost for the Celtics: he could help chemistry and culture.
Boston's coaching staff reportedly watched Thomas' latest performance in the G League. Does that mean there is a chance of this becoming a reality?
At this point, the Celtics are on their way to another strong playoff run. That run could only be improved with the addition of Thomas.
