For the last few weeks, fans of the Los Angeles Lakers have heard numerous rumors about D'Angelo Russell leaving the team before the NBA trade deadline this week. Many NBA analysts seem to think that Russell is sure to depart the team within a matter of days.
On Monday night, Russell had yet another sensational game, scoring 28 points on 10-of-21 shooting from the floor in a win over the Charlotte Hornets. And after the game, he spoke about the endless rumors about him being traded.
Russell sounded at peace with whatever would end up happening to him and the Lakers.
“Show up to work, that’s it," Russell said about his mindset. "I can’t control that my contract makes sense to be traded, so, just play. I can’t control that. Once again, I don’t care, at all.”
During the summer, Russell agreed to a two-year, $36 million contract with the Lakers, which includes an $18.6 million player option for next season. He also waived a no-trade clause, meaning that if the Lakers want to move him to another team, he has no choice but to honor their choice.
Since returning to the team following an injury earlier this season, Russell has been on a tear. He has averaged 23 points, 6.8 assists, and 2.5 rebounds per game during the last ten games. This terrific work from Russell has coincided with increased chatter about him leaving the team as if he has been playing better as a way to show his value to the team.
Despite how well he is playing, many reports state that Russell will still be traded before Thursday's trade deadline. But it isn't clear which team he will move to.
