At this point last season, the Denver Nuggets were statistically the best team in the Western Conference. When 2023-24 began, it soon became clear that other teams were going to be much more competitive. Sure enough, the Nuggets are currently the third-best team in their conference, behind both the Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves.
However, they have been surging lately and starting to look a lot like champions once again. As both the Thunder and Timberwolves have had problems recently, a pathway has opened for Nikola Jokic and his team to score back-to-back championships.
The Nuggets have gone 6-4 in their last ten games but have repeatedly looked incredibly competitive and cohesive. Jokic has been phenomenal lately, but so have other stars like Aaron Gordon, Jamal Murray, and Michael Porter Jr. Plus, they recently had a six-game winning streak, taking down teams such as the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, and Miami Heat, before falling to the Phoenix Suns in overtime on Tuesday night.
Meanwhile, the Timberwolves just received the devastating news that they may lose Karl-Anthony Towns for an extended amount of time. And the Oklahoma City Thunder recently got humbled by the Los Angeles Lakers, exposing their many weak points. In other words, the Nuggets are getting better while their two biggest competitors in the West are getting weaker.
Next up for the Nuggets will be the Boston Celtics on Thursday night. That might be a sneak preview of this year's NBA Finals and everyone will be paying close attention.
