The 7th seeded Philadelphia 76ers visited the 2nd seed New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden in Game 1 of the NBA playoffs where they came up short 111-104 despite a scoring outburst by their dynamic duo of Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
The 2 All-Stars for Philly combined for 62 points on 22/48 shooting. Kyle Lowry recorded 18 points with 4 triples while Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 10 points. Tobias Harris had a quiet game with 7 points and 9 boards.
Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 22 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 assists in this victory. Josh Hart matched that production with 22 points of his own to go along with 13 boards, including a dagger three with 1 minute remaining to put his team up by 7. Miles McBride had a huge contribution off the bench with 21 points and 5 three-pointers.
Midseason acquisitions OG Anunoby and Bojan Bogdanovic combined for 24 points and 4 triples while Mitchell Robinson recorded 8 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks off the bench.
New York takes a 1-0 lead in this best of 7 series and they made a statement in this game that they aren’t afraid of the reigning MVP. This team plays physical and is gritty on defense under head coach Tom Thibodeau. The Knicks will look to defend home court and take a 2-0 series lead on Monday.
Philadelphia drops the opening match in this series after pulling off a comeback win in their play-in game to make the playoffs. Their leader Joel Embiid is clearly not 100% and he went into the locker room again in this one. Despite the former MVP not being at full health, he is so dominant that he can still be one of the best players on the court at any given moment.
Tyrese Maxey looked phenomenal in his first playoff game with this increased role and he is showcasing his star potential. Even though the Sixers came up short in this one, they kept it close nearly the entire game and have proven to themselves that they can win this series. They will look to bounce back and tie things up in a couple days.
