Philadelphia 76ers forward
Joel Embiid and Minnesota
Timberwolves star
Karl-Anthony Towns cemented their names in the history books
on Monday.
Both players were extremely influential for their respective
teams in the matches against the San Antonio Spurs and Charlotte Hornets.
Embiid ended up scoring 70 points for the 76ers with 18
rebounds and five assists to his name whereas Towns registered 62 points with
eight rebounds and two assists.
It was only the fourth night in the history of the NBA where two
players ended up registering 60 or more points for their respective teams. The
last time it happened before Monday was 46 years back in 1978.
Previously, Wilt Chamberlain (78) and Elgin Baylor (63)
registered 60 or more points in a single night in 1961, Jerry West (63) and
Wilt Chamberlain (62) in 1962 and David Thompson (73) and George Gervin (63) in
1978.
While Embiid’s performance was enough to secure a win for
the Sixers as they defeated the Spurs with a score of 133-123, Towns’ incredible
outing was not enough for the Timberwolves as they suffered a narrow loss
against the Hornets with a score of 128-125.
Embiid is averaging 35 points per game which is the best in
the league. He is also averaging 11.4 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game this
season. On the other hand, Towns is averaging 21.6 points per game to go with
8.9 rebounds and three assists per game as well.
