Lavar Ball's three sons, LaMelo Ball, Lonzo Ball, and Liangelo Ball were all hyped up by their dad coming in to the NBA. Lonzo Ball was the 2nd overall pick by the Lakers in the 2017 draft, LaMelo Ball was the 3rd pick in the 2020 draft, while Liangelo Ball went un-drafted and had some stints with G-League teams but could never fully make a roster, and is currently playing for a team in Mexico.
Both LaMelo and Lonzo have not lived up to the hype that their dad Lavar put on them, and have been plagued with injuries their whole career.
Lonzo who in his career has averaged 11.9 points per game with 5.7 rebounds, and 6.2 assist has been more of a defensive player than offensive. His best year came in the 2020-2021 season were he averaged 14.6 points per game for the New Orleans Pelicans. Then he followed it up with an impressive start with the Chicago Bulls the following season shooting a career best 42.3 percent from three.
However, he hasn't played since that 2021-2022 season were he only played 35 games when he suffered a meniscus injury. The last time Lonzo played was Jan. 14th, 2022. It has been over two years since he played and it is unfortunate that this injury has kept him out so long since he was just starting to get his offensive game on track.
As far as LaMelo who has had a better start to his career than Lonzo has also been dealt with injuries. He won rookie of the year and was also an all-star in 2022 as well. He has averaged 20 points per game with 6.2 rebounds, and 7.4 assist per game.
Unlike Lonzo, LaMelo did have a season were he played more than 60 games in a year, however the last two seasons he only has a combined 58 games played due to injuries.
Lavar Ball on his Son's Injuries
Lavar ball who has been very quiet as of late with his son's compared to when they got drafted and he was popping up every week with a comment about them. He has finally opened up on why he thinks his son's have been dealt with injuries.
“The reason they hurt is because they got away from me. And they start doing these rooty-toot workouts. Because if you keep running them hills, you're going to keep that power and that strength. But you start dealing with these rubber bands and doing this lightweight stuff, of course you're going to start breaking down... A lot of things have to do with them raggedy shoes that Melo be wearing. Them shoes are not made the right way for him. That's why he keeps tweaking his ankle every single time.”
Lavar put the blame on the training staff and the shoes that they are wearing since they aren't wearing Lavar's shoes anymore. Once again he is putting the blame on other people for his son's struggles in the NBA. Hopefully Lonzo and LaMelo can both get healthy next year and start playing high level basketball again!
