On Thursday night, LeBron James poured in a powerful 31 points in an overtime win over the Washington Wizards. Not only did James help the Los Angeles Lakers claim a much-needed win, but he also brought him closer to an unparalleled NBA milestone. James is now just 9 points away from being the first player in NBA history to reach 40,000 points.
James will next play the Denver Nuggets on Saturday and, unless something wild happens, he will clinch that honor at home among adoring Lakers fans.
This isn't the first time that James has made history in the league, of course. He is already the top all-time scorer in NBA history, having earned that honor last season. He is far and away the top scorer in the association. The next-closest active player to James is Kevin Durant, but he has just 28,318. Behind Durant is James Harden with 25,600 and then Russell Westbrook with 25,092 and Stephen Curry with 23,198.
James has scored the majority of his points during his many years with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He put up 23,119 points during his multiple seasons playing for the Cavaliers. Of course, he also won a championship there too.
While playing for the Miami Heat, James produce 7,919 points, and he has scored 8,953 points while with the Lakers.
At this point, there are very few records left for James to break. After the 39-year-old legend passes 40,000 points on Saturday, he will have done yet another something that no other NBA player ever has. His place in history has been secured again and again.
