On Sunday night,
LeBron James shook up the NBA world once again when he spoke about his future in the league and possible retirement. When asked about how much longer he planned to play basketball, James said:
“Not very long. … I’m not gonna play another 21 years, that’s for damn sure. But not very long. I don’t know when that door will close as far as when I’ll retire. But I don’t have much time left.”
This was a frank, honest statement from James and not one that Lakers fans wanted to hear. It was also met with a ton of different responses from people, with some claiming he was seeking attention and others stating that he was speaking from the heart and clearly contemplating his future.
"Bro why today?" one fan on X, formerly known as Twitter, said.
"Why is he so attention seeking... we get it," another said.
"Just retire Luka is the new face of the league anyway," another stated.
James doesn't often speak about his plans for retirement, typically averting those questions by focusing on the here and now. But at 39 years old and after 21 seasons in the league, it is obviously front and center on his mind and something that he is considering.
On Sunday night, he had a stellar performance against the Brooklyn Nets, scoring 40 points and going 9-of-10 from beyond the three-point line. It was another terrific night for the four-time champion his post-game comments worried some, who fear that they won't get many more opportunities to see James shine like that.
