Things are not going very well for the
Portland Trail Blazers, in a number of ways. The team is currently the 14th team in the West with a dismal 15-39 record and their chances of making the playoffs are all but gone. Even with a few promising players, the team's first season in a post Damian Lillard era has been very rough.
That was made even more clear by a new report from Sports Business Journal, which found the Blazers' broadcasts on Roots Sports Northwest have seen viewership decrease by 60% in the 2023-24 season. It is clear that even fans in the Pacific Northwest have lost faith - and interest - in the team.
The Blazers are led by players like Anfernee Simons,
Jerami Grant, Shaedon Sharpe, and newcomer
DeAndre Ayton. The team also has rookie player
Scoot Henderson, who is averaging 12.9 points, 3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game.
Ayton was a big question mark heading into the season, as his last few years with the Phoenix Suns featured him being unhappy with the team. And although he had a slow start to the season with Portland, he has gotten better lately. After a 12-game absence because of a knee injury, Ayton has produced 17.5 points, 10.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists during his last 10 matches.
If the Blazers hope to turn things around in the months ahead, Ayton will quite literally be at the center of their plans. For now though, it seems that nearly everyone, including some diehard fans, have given up on the team.
