In this battle between two Texas teams, the San Antonio Spurs fell short to the Dallas Mavericks 113-107 at Frost Bank Center despite a huge defensive effort from Victor Wembanyama.
Wemby has been having an amazing season with averages of 20.8 points, 10.4 rebounds. 3.5 assists, 1.3 steals, and 3.5 blocks. He is a lock to win Rookie of the Year and despite all the hype and pressure that was placed on him, he has delivered. He leads the league in blocks and has more blocks than past DPOY winners like Rudy Gobert and Jaren Jackson Jr. He is already taking the league by storm at just 20 years old and he will be a problem for many years to come.
In this game, Vic finished with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 blocks. Tre Jones had a team-high 22 points and 9 assists while Devin Vassell scored 19 points. Jeremy Sochan ended with 13 points, 10 boards, and 6 assists while Keldon Johnson provided 14 points off the bench.
Kyrie Irving scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Mavs to victory. Luka Doncic recorded a triple-double, finishing with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 16 assists. However, he struggled from the field as he shot just 6/27 in this one. Dante Exum contributed 16 points off the bench while Daniel Gafford had 13 points and 8 boards.
Dallas improves to 40-29 with this win and are right on the cusp of earning a top 6 seed. This was a huge victory for the Mavericks as they would like to avoid the play-in tournament at all costs. They are 6-4 over their last 10 games and will look to pick up another win on Thursday against the Utah Jazz.
San Antonio drops to 15-54 with this loss and continue to struggle to close games out. However, it’s still a learning year for their prized possession Victor Wembanyama, so giving him these opportunities are huge for his development. The Spurs are 4-6 over their last 10 games and will look to bounce back on Friday against the Memphis Grizzlies.
