The Houston Rockets came into this contest red-hot as they were on a 5-game winning streak, and tonight they were able to extend that with a 137-114 victory over the Washington Wizards at Capital One Arena behind a career night for Jalen Green. That brings them closer to the Golden State Warriors and Los Angeles Lakers in the Play-In race.
The Rockets have one of the youngest cores in the NBA and they are bound to have tons of success within the next few years. They are led by rising star Alperen Sengun (who unfortunately is out for the rest of the season) and have a bunch of talented complimentary pieces such as Jabari Smith Jr. and Jalen Green. Houston also has an abundance of draft capital from the James Harden trade a few years back and they are setting themselves up to build a dynasty.
In this game, the former 2nd overall pick in the 2021 draft exploded for a career-high 42 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 7 three pointers. Amen Thompson recorded 25 points and 10 rebounds while Jabari Smith Jr. had 18 points and 14 boards. Fred VanVleet dished out 11 assists while Jeff Green contributed 12 points off the bench.
The Wizards were without leading scorer Kyle Kuzma, so Jordan Poole got a spot start and finished with 13 points on 28% shooting. Corey Kispert led the starting unit with 16 points with 4 triples. Richaun Holmes recorded 12 points and 9 rebounds. Justin Champagnie had 16 points and 8 boards off the bench while Jared Butler contributed 15 points and 9 assists.
Houston improves to 33-35 with this win and now sit just 2.5 games behind the Warriors for the 10th seed in the West. While it may be unlikely for the Rockets to sneak into the play-in tournament anything is possible and they are rolling at the moment. This is now their 6th win in a row and they will look to keep this momentum going on Thursday against the Chicago Bulls.
Washington drops to 11-58 with this loss and continue to hold the worst record in the NBA. It has been a disappointing season for the Wizards and they are looking forward to the off-season when they can shake things up. This team is on a 5-game losing streak and will face off against the Sacramento Kings on Thursday.
