Victor Wembanyama has had a phenomenal opening season in the NBA and might be well on his way to winning Rookie of the Year.
In his first season, Wembanyama is recording 20.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.3 steals, and a league-high 3.4 blocks per game.
His head coach, Gregg Popovich, has seen a lot of talent since taking his job leading the Spurs and he impressed many when he compared Popovich to an NBA legend, Tim Duncan.
Popovich said:
“He will make a step-back three and he won’t act like it is the first step-back three that has ever been made. He is just got more or less the Tim Duncan sort of attitude on things. That’s just who he is.”
There are a few similarities between Duncan and Wembanyama, beyond just their immense talent and their tall, slim frame.
Perhaps the biggest thing they have in common is that the future of the Spurs rested on both of their shoulders. During his 19 years in the NBA, Duncan led San Antonio to five championships. There is hope that Wembanyama can do the same.
However, there are difference too. For example, Duncan earned an All-Star appearance during his rookie year and Wembanyama did not.
Perhaps most fascinating is the fact that Duncan won his first championship with the Spurs during his second year. Is there any chance that Wembanyama can do the same?

Another quote from Pop on how Wemby maintains his poise on the court: "He will make a step-back three and he won’t act like it is the first step-back three that has ever been made. He is just got more or less the Tim Duncan sort of attitude on things. That’s just who he is."
