A few nights after a gut-wrenching defeat to the Los Angeles
Lakers in double overtime, the
Golden State Warriors got back on track tonight
with a huge victory over the
Philadelphia 76ers 119-107 at the Chase Center behind
a marvelous
Stephen Curry performance.
Despite Klay Thompson being a late scratch, the 9-time
All-Star Stephen Curry carried the team and led the Warriors with 37 points, 8
rebounds, and 7 assists on 71% shooting and 62% from 3. Curry is having a
phenomenal season and is on his way to becoming a 10-time All-Star, as he’s averaging
27.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 5 assists on 45/40/93 shooting splits. Former
All-Star Andrew Wiggins had a vintage performance, finishing with 23 points, 5
rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block on 80% shooting. 3rd year
forward Jonathan Kuminga had an all-around night as well, ending with x26
points 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals, and 1 block on 58% shooting. He’s been
playing really well for Golden State, as he’s scored 20 or more points in his
last 7 games that he’s played.
On the other hand, it was a rough night for
Joel Embiid and
the Philadelphia 76ers. Embiid returned from a 2-game absence, but he went into
the locker room multiple times and ended the night with 14 points and 7
rebounds on 28% shooting. Tobias Harris led the way for Philadelphia with his 26
points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. Forkan Korkmaz provided an
offensive punch off the bench as he scored 19 points.
For the Warriors, this win is huge as they are fighting to
get into the play-in tournament. They are currently 20-24 after tonight’s win,
which places them 12th in the Western Conference. Golden State is 1.5
games behind the 10th seeded Utah Jazz for the last spot in the
play-in tournament. This win helps the Warriors snap a 2-game losing streak,
and they will look to build off this win on Friday night when they go on the
road to face off against the Memphis Grizzlies.
On the other hand, this loss drops the 76ers to 29-17. They
are now 5th in the Eastern Conference and 1 game behind the 3rd
seeded New York Knicks. Philadelphia is on a 4-game losing streak and while
this is concerning for a team that wants to compete for a title, the main focus
should be on the health of their 2 stars, Joel Embiid and
Tyrese Maxey. Philadelphia’s
next chance to turn things around will be on Thursday night against the Utah
Jazz.
