Stephen Curry has come to
Draymond Green's defense following
Jusuf Nurkic's criticism at the end of yesterday's
Golden State Warriors-Phoenix Suns matchup;
Steph attributed the team's revival to Green's energy and intensity. The latter, who was involved in an indefinite suspension after choking Nurkic on the court in December, and facing the Bosnian again has not ended up too happy.
During the game, there were tense exchanges between Green and Nurkic, with provocations from both players. Despite this, Green maintained his level of aggressive play without crossing the line into serious penalties, something his coach,
Steve Kerr, considers essential to the team's performance.
"We need him competitive," Kerr said. "Draymond, if he's passive, we better not play him. Everything with him is about his strength, his energy and his competitiveness. That's what makes him unique and the great player he is. We want him to walk the line, but we don't want him to cross it."
After the game, Nurkic commented on Green, suggesting that he had not learned from his past actions and anticipating future incidents. This statement prompted a strong response from Curry, who called Nurkic's comments "idiotic" and defended his teammate.
"Draymond was in his head," Curry expressed. "Plain and simple."
The game was also marked by a particularly intense sequence in the third quarter, where Green and Nurkic exchanged provocative words and gestures. Green, in response to a celebration by Nurkic, demonstrated his aggressiveness on the court without crossing the limits of what was acceptable.
In short, Curry's statements and the actions of Green and Nurkic have added an additional level of drama and rivalry to the competition in the NBA. While Green looks to maintain his level of competitive play without incurring penalties, Nurkic continues to be a provocative rival. The relationship between these players will continue to be an intriguing aspect to follow in future meetings between the Warriors and Trail Blazers.
