As if things weren't already tough enough for the
Cleveland Cavaliers.
The team recently lost Game 3 to the
Boston Celtics, putting them in a 1-2 hole and just two losses away from being eliminated in the
playoffs. They have also been without big man Jarrett Allen for all of the series, only making matters worse.
But late Monday afternoon, the team got even worse news:
Donovan Mitchell will not suit up for Game 4 in Cleveland. Mitchell was labeled as doubtful for much of the day on Monday, but Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported that the All-Star would be unable to play due to a calf ailment that flared up at the conclusion of Game 3, according to Cavs coach JB Bickerstaff.
An injury to Mitchell is the last thing the Cavaliers wanted to hear because he has been the brightest spot on the squad by a significant margin during the playoffs.
Mitchell averages 29.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.3 steals in 38.2 minutes per game, shooting 47.6 percent from the field and 35.4% from three. During his three games against the Celtics, he's put up 31.7 points.
Without Mitchell, the team's offense will be even more impaired agains the super tight defense of the Celtics. This will make their odds of winning Monday night's game even slimmer and puts them in a tough position. They were already the underdogs, but the loss of Mitchell makes that even more true.
