The
Dallas Mavericks have been doing better than expected for much of the 2023-24 NBA season. But there are still many more games to play and the team has to stay consistent for all of them. And when the summer comes, they will have to make some difficult decisions about a select few contracts.
There are actually three players who could be sent packing this offseason in order for the Mavericks to save some money and add more talent, especially if they fall short this postseason and don't reach the Western Conference Finals again.
The first would be
Dwight Powell. For the last few seasons, Powell has been a crucial part of the team's frontcourt but the additions of Dereck Lively II and Daniel Gafford make him mostly unnecessary now. And although his contract isn't that expensive, it could be money spent elsewhere.
Tim Hardaway Jr. is another player who may say goodbye to the Mavericks this offseason. His average in Dallas is 15.7 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists, which definitely aren't bad, but he is criticized for being "streaky" and not consistent enough. It wouldn't be surprising to see Hardaway leave the team this summer, especially since the team reportedly tried to ship him out last summer.
Maxi Kleber is another Mavericks player whose time in Dallas could be coming to an end. This season, he is putting up just 5.7 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists and is set to make $11 million both this season and next. Because of his diminished output this season and the money that he is owed by the team, he is perhaps the most likely candidate for a trade this offseason.
Whatever moves the Mavericks make, they will be focused on providing more help for
Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving on both ends of the court. Now that the team looks like true playoff contenders, they want to capitalize and add even more talent.
