Many people expected both the
Golden State Warriors and
Chicago Bulls to be very busy before the recent NBA
trade deadline. However, when the time came, both teams sat still and didn't make any big changes.
However, Marc Stein is reporting that the Warriors nearly acquired Bulls star
Alex Caruso, but then the deal for him fell apart.
“The Bulls, league sources say, wound up giving real consideration to trading [Alex] Caruso on Deadline Day after insisting for weeks that they wouldn’t. But Chicago’s talks with Golden State ultimately collapsed and then the Bulls, league sources say, informed Philadelphia that they were keeping Andre Drummond, too, with the Sixers pressing to acquire the former All-Star center,” reported Stein.
In many ways, Caruso seems like a perfect fit for the Warriors. With his average of 9.8 pints and 3.8 rebounds per game, he would have helped the team with their offensive plans. But Caruso has long been considered one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, despite only being six-foot-five. He could have provided an immediate boost to Golden State's lacking defense.
It sounds like the Bulls were contemplating some major deals right before the deadline but then suddenly decided against them. They told the Philadelphia 76ers that they weren't going to move Andre Drummond, took Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan off the market, and shut down this potential trade with the Warriors.
As for the Warriors, they also didn't commit to anything, so the team looks very much the same as they push into the second half of the season.
Just because the teams didn't commit to anything at the trade deadline doesn't mean that they won't come back to each other in the offseason. This Caruso deal could come back to life in the summer.
