Zach Edey is receiving a ton of attention right now, as his Purdue Boilermakers just came very close to winning the NCAA Tournament on Monday night. During all of March Madness, the talented big man has shown a plethora of skills that could attract serious attention in the upcoming
NBA draft.
Many mock drafts imagine Edey going late in the first round or early in the second. That means that the
Los Angeles Lakers, who have an interest in the youthful center, might try to acquire him.
However, they might have to balance their desire for Edey with
LeBron James' hope to play with his son, Bronny. The Lakers are limited when it comes to their draft picks, particularly because the New Orleans Pelicans could own one of their picks if they choose, thanks to the Anthony Davis trade from several years ago.
If the Pelicans decide to take the draft pick they are owed by LA, the Lakers will be out of luck in the first round. If Edey then falls to the second round, they can use their other pick to get him, but they might have to sacrifice landing Bronny.
This will be a difficult choice to make for the Lakers, but it might be made for them. If Bronny chooses to spend another year in college, he will pull his name from the draft and make LA's choice much easier.
There are still questions about Edey, such as how he will translate his skills from college to the NBA. The Lakers, or any other team, may view him as a long-term commitment, someone who needs to be developed and guided through his path in the league.
Edey or James? The Lakers will have a choice to make. They are hoping that it won't be one that tears the team apart.
