The
Dallas Mavericks were without their 2 stars,
Luka Doncic
and Kyrie Irving, and the
Minnesota Timberwolves took full advantage. Karl-Anthony
Towns led the Timberwolves to a dominant win over the Mavericks 121-87 at the
Target Center.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have been playing extremely well
this season and not many NBA fans expected them to be the 1st seed
in the Western Conference heading into February. The Timberwolves have one of
the best defenses in the entire NBA led by Rudy Gobert and one year following
the blockbuster Gobert trade, it’s not looking so bad after all.
KAT led Minnesota in tonight’s game, finishing with 29
points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists on 73% shooting. Rudy Gobert had 17 points, 6
rebounds, and 2 blocks on 56% shooting while backup center Naz Reid contributed
12 points and 8 rebounds with 3 made threes. It was a tough night for star
Anthony Edwards, as he finished with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.
With the 2 All-Stars out, Josh Green led the Mavericks in
scoring with 18 points on 8/13 shooting. Tim Hardaway Jr. had 14 points on 20%
shooting while Jaden Hardy scored 15 points. Richaun Holmes got the start for
the injured Dereck Lively and he finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 3
assists, and 2 blocks.
For Minnesota, this win improves their record to 34-14, helping
them maintain the 1st seed in the Western Conference and keeping
them 1 game above the 2nd seed OKC Thunder. Minnesota is rolling,
winning 7 of their last 10 games, and they will look to continue that trend as
they face the Orlando Magic on Friday night.
Meanwhile, for the Mavericks, this loss drops them to 26-22,
making them fall to the 8th seed in the Western Conference. They are
1 game behind the 7th seeded New Orleans Pelicans and 2.5 games
above the 9th seeded Los Angeles Lakers. The next game for Dallas
will be on Saturday night against the Milwaukee Bucks, and they’ll hope to get
their key pieces back for that matchup.
