There are many rivalries throughout the NBA but few are as youthful and promising and exciting as the one between rookies
Victor Wembanyama of the
San Antonio Spurs and
Chet Holmgren of the
Oklahoma City Thunder. The two met on Wednesday night and it was an evening to remember.
When the game was over, Wembanyama outdid Holmgren, scoring 24 points, 12 rebounds, and 4 blocks to Holmgren's 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks. But it was Holmgren's team that reigned supreme, easily winning 140-114.
As it has been all season, Wembanyama outperformed Holmgren on paper but the Thunder were definitely the better team. It feels like it'll be a few years before the Spurs are on the same level as the Thunder, who are currently the best team in the Western Conference.
Wembanyama is averaging 20.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists. He is also leading the league with 3.2 blocks per game. Meanwhile, Holmgren is putting up 17.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game.
Both players are frontrunners to be this season's Rookie of the Year. When the year first got started, most people assumed that Wembanyama was a lock for that prize but now it's not entirely clear who will win and Holmgren has a very good chance at surprising the league and claiming that trophy.
The Thunder, meanwhile, will most certainly continue to do much better than the Spurs, who are are the worst team in the Western Conference.
The rivalry between these two players will continue, even if the Thunder are far superior than the Spurs, at least for now.
