As it was largely anticipated,
Doc Rivers became the
Milwaukee Bucks' new head coach this Thursday, after signing a $40 million dollar contract to be working with the franchise until 2027.
Rivers have been collaborating with the Bucks coaching staff for a while, and after firing former head coach,
Adrian Griffin, he certainly emerged as the almost undisputed candidate for a position on Milwaukee's bench.
Doc is expected to earn over $11 million per year during his tenure in Milwaukee. Not a bad deal, especially considering that until the Heat signed a contract extension with Erik Spoelstra, Monty Williams was the highest paid coach in the NBA, earning more than $13 million per season.
Giannis and the rest of the team are hopeful that with this sudden change of direction, they'll add that Championship pedigree to get over the hump and bring back the title to the city, as they did three years ago.
The Bucks situation wasn't the worse by far, as they currently hold the number two spot in the Eastern Conference, and are tied at a second place overall with the top 2 teams of the Western Conference, OKC and Minnesota. However, there were some signs of lack of chemistry between the Bucks' star, Giannis Antetokuonmpo and Andrian Griffin.
In addition, the team's defensive plummeted, from being top 5 in the league the last three seasons to becoming one of the worst defenses in the entire NBA.
Rivers will have to overcome a narrative that's been chasing him from his Clippers days, that emphasizes the perception that Doc is an overrated coach, and that he only won one Championship due to having a stacked Boston Celtics team, back in 2008.
