Washington Wizards have confirmed that Wes Unseld Jr. will step down as the team's head coach to assume a new role as a consultant in the front office. After two and a half seasons at the helm, Unseld Jr. has compiled a 77-130 (.372) record, and although his time on the bench did not achieve the desired results, the team recognizes his qualities and is offering him a new role within the organization.
Wizards President of Basketball Operations, [name of president], stated, "After several thoughtful conversations with Wes, we decided together that a change was necessary for the benefit of the team. Wes embodies the characteristics we value in our organization, and his vast basketball experience will be an asset to the front office as we move toward our long-term goals. We are grateful for his continued contributions to our organization and community."
Wes Unseld Jr. was named head coach of the Wizards on July 17, 2021, and despite the challenges on the field, his commitment and dedication to the team did not go unnoticed. In this regard, Unseld Jr. commented, "I am grateful to have served as head coach of the Washington Wizards. I look forward to this new opportunity to work for the continued progress of our organization."
With this decision, the team is now in search of an interim head coach, whose appointment is expected later today. In addition, the Wizards have announced that they will conduct a comprehensive search for a new head coach in the off-season.
