Fans react on social media to the news of Donovan
Mitchell not willing to commit to signing a new contract with the Cleveland
Cavaliers.
The 27-year-old has been one of the star performers for the
franchise in the ongoing campaign. His future has been the talking point for a
long time with one of the Cavaliers owners Dan Gilbert recently expressed
optimism about keeping the player beyond this season.
“We’ve been talking to him, sure, for the last couple of
years about extending this contract,” he said while talking to the Associated Press
on Thursday. “We think he will extend. I think if you listen to him talk, he
loves the city.
“He loves the situation in Cleveland because our players are
very young and we’re just kind of putting the core together that he’s clearly
the biggest part of.”
However, Mitchell, while talking to the media on Saturday,
refused to commit to his long-term future with the franchise by stating that he has
a lot to ‘focus on outside’.
"My focus is — I've got a lot of things to focus on
outside of that right now,” he said. “I’ve got to focus on myself, getting back
for this group, focus on us getting over this stretch, continuing to be ready
when it comes time."
Those comments caught the attention of the fans on social media. One fan wrote on X: "Donovan Mitchell always welcomed in NYC
to play for the Knicks,” whereas another one expressed fear that he is definitely
leaving the franchise by writing: “Yeah he is not staying lol.”
Mitchell has contributed 27.1 points per game which is by far
the best any Cavaliers players in the ongoing campaign. To go with that, he is
also contributing 5.3 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game as well.
