Every coach’s dream is to have a selection dilemma where he
has the choice to pick in-form players. That might well become the case for the
Chicago Bulls, not by
design but maybe because of an injury that might turn out to be a blessing in disguise.
When
Zach Lavine suffered an injury in January, it was
feared that the Bulls would struggle to cope up without their prolific player but
that has not been the case.
That is largely down to point guard
Coby White who has been in
sublime scoring form and is now becoming a force to be reckoned with in the
attacking department with DeMar DeRozan.
The same opinion has been shared by the Athletic journalist Darnell
Mayberry who, in a recent article, stated how the Bulls’ management might find
it hard to accommodate someone like LaVine fit into the starting lineup in his
preferred position.
"It’s difficult to envision a scenario in which
LaVine’s return to the Bulls doesn’t disrupt White’s ascension," he wrote.
"White has supplanted LaVine as the team’s second-leading scorer, morphing
into a reliable second-scoring option next to DeRozan — while playing on a much
cheaper contract."
In addition, Zach LaVine had a season below his level before getting injured, in which he contributed 19.5 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. On the other hand, Coby White is exploding more and more, and step by step he is becoming the star of the franchise, with which he is currently averaging 19.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 5.3 assists per game.
